I keep my twitter account private because it seems that there is alot of spamming, marketing, and offers of sex. For example, I am following a very well known professor in a particular field and a majority of his so called "followers" are in the categories just mentioned. It's a travesty and it completely ruins the idea behind twitter. I wish that twitter would ban those types of accounts, so that all of us could feel better about going public.

Thank you for your blog. I thought of this solution the other day: Have multiple Twitter accounts, one with privacy, and one public. Although it is cumbersome, you can participate in public conversations with one, alwhile share what you ate last night in the private account, which in mine, only close friends are following.

Privacy is very important to me. I plan to set up my public account without my name or picture. But hopefully I can have relevant conversation with others, and they accept me with creditabilty.

<a href="#comment-54" rel="nofollow">@Marc K</a>
Hi Marc! Thanks for the comment. My solution hasn't been a fantastic one; I now have unprotected updates (as I'm sure you've seen), but I'm very aware of what I'm tweeting. I'm in Toronto - that is public knowledge.. but I'm more conscious of giving away too much personal information. It's become clear that Twitter is a tool that thrives on public sharing; yes, you can choose to keep your updates locked down, but the tool will become a different experience. I am very aware that my account is now public, so the nature of my tweets has changed.

If Twitter had groups, things would be different; I'd rather control who my messages go out to.. instead of the whole world. Hopefully we get there soon.

Fantastic blog entry. I feel exactly the same way. Found this posting while doing a search on twitter privacy settings. This summed it up in a nutshell nicely. Did you ever come with a solution? BTW, I'm technomensch that just started following you on twitter.

Friends of mine were recently married and they decided to live-tweet their honeymoon. It was very cute: http://www.twitter.com/kandcgetmarried

I totally agree, we need more restaurants on OpenTable; ideally all of them ... haha ... Its a great service for finding what's available at a restaurant and a good way to provide users an action when they're looking at reviews and really excited about something.

When I was in NYC I booked all my restaurants through OpenTable
